How Are Egg Donors Selected? Requirements, Criteria, and Screening Process in Ukraine

Egg donation is an essential part of assisted reproductive technologies for couples who are unable to conceive a child. In Ukraine, this process is regulated by law, which ensures the rights of both donors and intended parents. Therefore, this article discusses the procedures for egg donor in Ukraine selection: the medical and psychological requirements for egg donors and the steps in the screening process.

Key Requirements For Egg Donors

Becoming an egg donor is not only an opportunity to help build a family, but also an important responsibility. Candidates must meet several key criteria:

  • Age limits. In Ukraine, women between the ages of 18 and 32 are eligible to donate. This age range is considered optimal for obtaining high quality eggs while minimizing health risks for the donor.
  • Health status. Donors must be in good physical and mental health. Before applying, a woman undergoes a comprehensive medical examination, including:
  • General blood and urine tests; screening for HIV; hepatitis B and C, and syphilis; hormone tests to assess ovarian function; genetic screening for hereditary conditions.

  • Lifestyle standards. Candidates must refrain from smoking, alcohol and drug use as these factors can affect egg quality.

The Screening Process For Candidates

The selection of an egg donor is a multi-stage process with several critical steps:

  • Preliminary questionnaire. Women who are interested in donating complete a detailed questionnaire about their medical history, lifestyle, family medical background and motivations for donating.
  • Medical examination. This step includes a physical examination, laboratory tests and an ultrasound scan of the ovaries. Doctors assess the candidate’s overall health, reproductive potential and any potential risks.
  • Genetic testing. Genetic screening is mandatory to rule out hereditary conditions that could be passed on to the child.
  • Psychological assessment. Because egg donation is an emotionally charged process, it’s important to ensure that the donor is mentally prepared. A psychologist will assess the donor’s stress tolerance, motivation and emotional wellbeing.
  • Matching with intended parents. Once a candidate has successfully completed the screening process, their profile is added to a donor database. Intended parents can select a donor based on their preferences and criteria.
